Euwe Memorial 2015


Dr Max Euwe (20 May 1901 - 26 November 1981) was a Dutch chess Grandmaster, World Chess Champion (1935 - 1937), and FIDE President (1970 - 1978). Euwe (pronounced uhr-vuh) earned a doctorate in mathematics at the University of Amsterdam. Euwe had also won the Amateur Heavyweight Boxing Championship of Europe. Euwe also authored or co-authored a number of highly instructional chess books, including "The Road to Chess Mastery", "The Middle Game" - books 1 and 2, "Judgment and Planning in Chess", and "Chess Master vs Chess Amateur".

Botvinnik Swiss



Mikhail Moiseyevich Botvinnik (17 August 1911 - 5 May 1995), was World Champion from 1948 to 1957; 1958 - 1960; and 1961 to 1963. Botvinnik was know as the "Patriarch of the Soviet Chess School", his students included Kasparov, Karpov and Kramnik. Glenwood Chess Chess Club celebrates Botvinnik's contributions to chess with a 7 round swiss tournament. The time control for the tournament is 90/90. Glenwood Chess Club 1st Annual General Meeting

Dear Members and Parents

The Glenwood Chess Club will be having its 1st AGM:

Date: 6th February 2015
Venue: Glenwood Preparatory School (playing hall)
Time: 18h00 for 18h30 start

This is a formality we have to conduct before we can start the 2015 calendar year. After the AGM, we will open to friendly matches. Click here for the AGM Agenda. Supporting documentation will be emailed closer to the date.

Glenwood Chess Club will be starting again on the 13th of February. So please spread the word.

Entry Forms for club and other tournaments will be emailed within the next few days.

We hope to see all of you make a return to the club as you each allowed for the club to be successful. The club committee has decided to go even bigger this year with more tournaments being added to the calendar, and also plans are in motion to host a huge FIDE tournament in Durban.

Aarti Datharam - African Youth Chess Champion u8 Girls (Tied 1st)
Cailin Chetty - 2nd place u12 Boys (Tied 2nd)
Naseem Essa - 3rd place u12 Boys (Tied 2nd)

All 3 players received titles - WCM for Aarti and CM for Cailin and Naseem.
